We're hardly first past the post here, the first song we're going to waffle on about was released back in March and he has apparently self-produced five (FIVE? We should probably double check our facts here) albums already, but we only just came across Peter Lyons and really like him. Actually, that's a lie. We only just came across Peter Lyons and we really, REALLY like him. Listen to this song, 'Think, Think, Think', and then tell us that that's not super smart lyrics coupled with some bloody great production.
Peter Lyons 'Think, Think, Think':
There are several other wonderful songs already on his Myspace. 'Gods Eyes' opens with some hulking string before turning into, dare we make the analogy, a Radiohead-esque ballad. 'Regret' is a more straightforward affair, which has echoes of early (before he went all whiny and irritating) Rufus Wainwright.
What's really interesting here are the arrangements and production. There are many layers and sounds firing off in all directions, which makes for more than your run of the mill singer-songwriter.
Peter also released some of his music on a limited edition cassette tape, which earns instant 'redundant format' brownie points from us.
We might have been late to the party on this one, but we promise to be at the front of the queue for him in future.
Listen to some things on his Myspace.
Buy 'Think, Think, Think' here.
PS. The photo is by Will Evans. I think we have to say that or we get sued or, at the very least, a strongly worded letter.
