Pak's Wig Shop Billboard: Lissie is more

The customers of Paks wig shop have got varied visual treats on their billboard this month.

First up is Kele off of Bloc Party's solo album 'The Boxer'. We're finding the whole Kele campaign rather interesting. One moment he's swinging around in his pants on the cover of a gay magazine asking why we can't have an edgy and tough gay pop star. Then, when it comes to the album concept, he's gone all moody and tough and called himself 'The Boxer'.

None of this really bothers us - we've always been big fans of Kele and his open attitude to his sexuality - but it's interesting to see how the media and a major label are playing off/fending off his sexuality as part of the campaign for his solo career. We never remeber it being mentioned in any publicity/interviews for Bloc Party.

Anyway, politics, yawn, boring. Here's what we really care about. The music.

The (definitely not gay, certainly very brooding) album's out today. Buy it here.

We won't spend too long dwelling on the massive Oasis poster. Suffice to say we don't really need to make any jokes about 'Time Flies'/how bored you would be having to sit through that album. It's out now and we're not going to provide a link.

Then there's Lissie. We don't think Pak's like Lissie very much as they have torn her poster to shreds. We heard (when we say 'heard' we mean 'her PR sent us a youtube video of') her doing a cover of Kid Cudi's 'Pursuit Of Happiness' the other day and quite liked it.

Lissie is a funny one. Not in the sense of telling lots of jokes, but in the sense of who the hell is she and what does she do?

We know her name, but we've no idea where we've heard it. We know her album is out this week because we've seen the poster outside Pak's, but we couldn't tell you what it's called. We know she is often seen riding on the coat tails of singing with her friend Ellie Goulding, but we always end up just watching Ellie and wondering who her blonde friend is. We know she posts lots of videos of her doing cover versions on youtube, but we've never heard one of her own songs.

This is an intriguing case of brilliant marketing over anyone bothering to get the actual music to radio. The album's out this week so we can see how it does in the charts, but by the time Sunday comes round we will probably have forgotten who she is again.

  1. What exactly qualifies as "not gay" music? And who cares if it's "gay" if it's good?
